Hunkar Restaurant: Turkish; Carlstadt; 319 Hackensack St; 25/21/$29; 201-507-0606; Has BYO; the full package of cool décor, attentive service and authentic cuisine cooked to perfection;  Back patio with Manhattan views; Home cooked meals; Get the mixed grill, I demand it!  Shepards salad is spot on; Tons to pick from on extensive menu; Order lots to share. Alternative to eating Greek.

Dayi’nin Yeri: Turkish; Cliffside Park; 333 Palisade Av; 25/17/$31; 201-840-1770;  Amazing Turkish BYO;  Kababs are other worldly;  Lamb Chops are succulent; Pita bread baked fresh daily; Best Kunefe in Jersey; All the local Turkish people rave about the authenticity; I suggest getting the large mixed appetizer and then a combo Kebab for main course (to share of course). Have many Turkish pizzas as well. 


TorosTurkish; Clifton; 489 Hazel St; 23/21/$36; 973-772-8032; Beautifully decorated inside- old world Turkish décor and furniture; Website is excellent- featuring pictures of all the dishes for newcomers; Authentic, tasty dishes; Usual kebabs, breads and spreads; Great Turkish beer available. $11.95 multi course lunch special. Wine list. You will be surprised how much you enjoyed it. Check out their site.


SamdanTurkish; Cresskill; 178 Piermont Rd @ Union Av; 22/16/$35; 201-816-7343; The grilled seafood and meats stand out; Kebab heaven; Dining room somewhat plain and formal- certainly a mature setting; Very traditional dishes; One of the few Turkish restaurants in county. Interesting wine list; Limited seafood options; Easy-to-share portions; Fairly priced main courses. If you love lamb, prepare!  Website has pictures of all the dishes.
Royal WarsawPolish; Elmwood Park; 871 River Dr; 24/20/$33; 201-794-9277; Polish comfort food including great potato pancakes; Hopping bar scene featuring Wednesday ladies night; Imported beers; Unusual dishes, creative cuisine; Huge menu to sample all the classics of the region. Website has pictures and descriptions of most dishes; Food cleverly presented; You will go home with leftovers; Inexpensive drinks; Party/ date atmosphere. Pierogi mania; Even serve Frogs legs.  Happy Hour 3-6pm;  



BenniesLebanese; Englewood; 54 E Palisade Av @ Grand; 24/14/$31;  201-894-5700; Truly authentic Lebanese regional cuisine; Spinach, cheese and meat pie appetizers; Chicken Shawarma sandwich, Falafel and Shish Kebob stands out; Hookah options. Been around 18 years and owned by same family; The food will impress you – even if Mediterranean cuisine isn’t your thing.  Grilled Ahi Tuna;  BYO.  

Pilsener Haus: German; Hoboken; 1422 Grand @ 15th St; 22/20/$38; 201-683-5465; Gigantic Beer Garden; 2,000 Sq foot outdoor patio; 6,000 sq feet inside; Upstairs lounge; Over 20 imported German drafts and 50+ other beers by the bottle; Great Bavarian pretzels, strudels, goulash, schnitzels, sausages, rotisserie chicken and more; Opens at noon on weekends; Giant steins of bee available; Weekend brunch. 


Mesob: Ethiopian; Montclair; 515 Bloomfield Av @ Park; 25/22/$32; 973-655-9000; Outstanding, I mean super good Ethiopian; This is a must-try for any adventurous eater;  Finger foods mixed with delicate Injera bread;  Get a sampler platter;  Informative service; Modern, date-friendly setting;  The dishes are just so flavorful – you will be converted;  Look out Indian & Thai – here comes Ethiopian. BYO.



Toros: Turkish; New Milford; 690 River Road; 23/21/$36; 201-265-0004; Beautifully decorated inside- old world Turkish décor and furniture; Website is excellent- featuring pictures of all the dishes for newcomers; Authentic, tasty dishes; Usual kebabs, breads and spreads; $11.95 multi course lunch special. Wine list. You’ll be surprised how much you enjoyed it. Check out website. This location is BYOB.


Lisa’s Mediterranean Kitchen: Turkish; Ridgewood; 28 Oak St; 21/20/$37; 201-251-8686; Belly dancing on Thursdays bring energy to this friendly, high quality Turkish restaurant; Mixed Grill is excellent;  BYO; Authentic cooking and ingredients. Extremely friendly service; Great effort made here. Massive menu with tons of seafood, kebabs etc. Order 4-5 appetizers instead! Mixed Apprtizer plate, Homemade Manti (dumplings) are way to go. Whole Bronzino;


Europe Café & Grill: Turkish; Tenafly; 1 Highwood Av; 20/21/$34; 201-569-4444; Very welcoming interior with tile floors, exposed brick and open kitchen; Lots of grilled specials; $12 lunch specials include 3 courses – I suggest this;  BYO; For dinner try the sizzling calamari then a Chicken, Feta or Meat Pide from their brick oven. Grilled lamb dishes great as well. 


Beyti Kebab: Turkish; Union City; 4105 Park Av @ 41st St; 22/14/$27; 201-936-0640; Extremely good Turkish restaurant; Great(ish) for dates or family; Baklava is epic; Very authentic cuisine; Kebabs solid- be prepared to eat lamb or chicken; BYO; Hummus and baba ghanoush outstanding. Belly dancers on Saturdays except Summer. Good bang for the buck.
